A knee update

Today i went for a knee follow-up. My knee is not worse, but it isn't a whole lot better. Mr. Vet is concerned about me losing any more muscle in my leg, and the water therapy machine is likely to not be big enough for me (my vet doesn't have one but there is one an hour away). So, I have been given permission to RUN! I can run and as soon as I limp the surgery will be scheduled. Basically it's a last ditch effort to see if I've healed enough but much longer and I will have a wimpy leg. So based on my ability to cause myself bodily harm surgery is likely in my future.

When I came home from the vet I was allowed to run and I was crazy! I haven't hurt myself yet, so we'll see.

Note from Tucker's Momma: Tucker is not limping but you can tell he is still favoring his leg some. You should have seen him run, he was having a blast. It breaks my heart to see him smile after finally running knowing we've had to restrict him for the last 8 weeks and he'll likely need the surgery anyway. We are going with the traditional surgery or the "tightrope" method not the TPLO. The TPLO I find to be too invasive and our vet doesn't specialize in it. Our vet says it takes 3 days to use the leg and after a week he'll almost be walking normal. Then we will slowly increasing exercise and freedom. Our best benefit is that although Tucker is a very tall Dane (37 1/2 inches to his withers) he is very lean. He only weighs about 140 pounds which is very light for a Dane his size. Male Danes at that height tend to weigh 160 or more. There is still a chance that the cruciate ligament has healed enough to support the running, but not likely. As soon as he limps we'll call to schedule the blood work, x-rays, and surgery. As much as the surgery scares us Tucker needs to be able to run and enjoy being a dog.

Okays, first things first -I had a setback with my knee and I is back on medicine and crossing my paws very hard that my healing will get back on track. We talked with Mr. Vet and he said he wasn't surprised that I "tweaked" my knee again because of my past history. So what if ALL my health problems are labeled "self induced" on my record, whatever. Momma's been a wreck abouts my potential surgery and the woman won't even let me go out into the FENCED backyard to do my business at 5:30 in the morning unless I'm on a leash. She says she can't trust me not to try to do zoomies in the snow. Crazy woman - who does zoomies at 5:30 in the morning? 6 maybe, but nots 5:30.

In better news remember my 12 Tucker days of Christmas? Well,Wyatt suggested I enter PetSafe's 12 Days of Christmas contest and I was one of the winners!

We were surprised when a big package arrived this week!

Look at all the loot! I heated bed, that the kittehs are totally excited about (it says it's a small dog bed but they can't read and Vader is extra ~~Fat~~ fluffy anyway). A drinkwell waterer that we will gives to cousin Bambi (since the kitteh's already have one of these great inventions), some toys for me and a t-shirt for the hoomans.

And these lickety sticks are great, it was my first time trying them.

See how big my tongue is? Oh and there is a little drool.

And I gots this very awesome treat ball, here is video of me figuring out how to use it. (Caution I make funny noises when I play wif something the first time).

Adventure Animals

"You don't need to go hiking all over the countryside wasting unnecessary energies to be an adventure animal. Just trying new stuff like my physical therapies school or being bold enough to approach something scary or just about anything you can think of. After all, isn't life just one big adventure?"

I is very excited for another year of Mango Minster! This year I is entering the Adventure category. I had a lot of adventures this year and all three years of my Dane life so far. Before I gets started recapping some of my adventures lets start wif the basics.

1. Every good adventure needs a little luggage. I mean come on, I was gonna be gone for at least 4 hours.

2. Brings a Map - the hoomans get lost

3. Drinks plenty of water

AND.....

4. Always scoop - makes the hoomans do it - yes you too little pups. I knows your poops may not be huge but they is still poop. Yes it stinks, but it stinks even mores when you steps in it. I always gotta carry my own on hikes.

So what kind of adventures do i take? Walkies at State Parks, the National Park, and the Rails to Trails System.

You can't forgets about Beach Walkies!

Then there's trips to the camp (near the scary playground steps).

This year I went to Vegas wif Corbin, joined a tick party in ConnecTICKut, and passed through border crossing to Canada. Canada even put up no Tucker signs when they heard I was coming... Not very welcoming if you ask me.

Now indoor adventures are ok, like Petco & PetSmart. But I also have gone to the Bank, Home Depot, Lowe's, and yes Dooney and Burke. I promise I didn't slobber on any purses.

Oh and Ice cream stores! I can't forgets about those.

But, outdoor adventures are the best! Like the vacation on the lake last August and Ice Fishing in February.

Also, traveling to rescue fundraisers always makes you new friends

Now you don't need to leave home to have an adventure! This year I've made an attempt at agility, fostering Navi and Mac, raising chickens, dancing to Elvis, and hula hooping!

The best part of adventures is just getting to go - it doesn't matter where!

And of course coming home to your couch is kinda nice too.

Hello Bloggie world! Did you forgets about me? Just in case here is a picture to jogs your memory.

The household is doing much betters now. The Momma doesn't cry every times you say Ellie's name and I is feeling much better. My knee has made huge improvements and you can barely tell i hurt myself. This week we should get the word from the vet but I think I will be ok wifout surgery. I put all my weight on my bad leg to do scratchies wif my good leg and I don't fall down - that is good news! Plus i can turn around much better now. And, my medicines are gone and I am still doing well. Now for some more updates:

It's been really warm here but we did have a white Christmas! And, yes I gots caught trying to do zoomies in the snow and gots in trouble.

I gots some really nice pressies for Christmas, my favorite is my squeaky chicken.

And the bestest news! I gots to me meet my new Cousin!

Meet Storm, a 7 year old Rottie that was adopted my my favorite Aunt D right after Thanksgiving.

You can't see but I promise her nub was a waggin on our first greeting!

I even shared my Momma wif her, isn't she adorable?

Now I've got a lot of blogging catch up to do so I apologize for not leaving comments but we are trying to read everything. Also, I see I have to figure out what category to enter Mango Minster in. My fingers where crossed for "Spotted dogs that sleep on the couch" but that category still hasn't been accepted. Maybe next year.

When it rains....

it pours, right? I have the knee ouchies. The vet says I tore the cruciate ligament in my back knee. The only good news is that he thinks I didn't rupture it. Based on the fact that I become a total wimp at the vet and get all shaky and nervous he couldn't quite feel for sure how bad the instability in my knee is. But since I am really not limping (I just turn funny and don't put weight on my leg when standing) and that I showed zero signs of pain he doesn't think it ruptured. Or I is just very strong.

Official treatment is 3 weeks of pain medicine (deremaxx and a pain shot in my butt) with close monitoring of my actions - no running, jumping, zoomies, or playing wif other doggies. I must walk at least an hour every day. I must make improvements each week and report these to Mr. Vet. If improvements are not being made it means x-ray & surgery. I have not had an x-ray yet because it is very scary to put big doggies under anesthesia. So, if I needs an x-ray I'll get the surgery too. Mr. Vet and the hoomans don't want me to have to go under twice. The real statistics are if the tear is under 50% it can heal on it's own (it very well may tear again though). Mr. vet thinks there is a 20% chance that I will needs the surgery.

How is I suppose to enjoy the Holidays if I can't do zoomies?

Note from Momma: Tucker doesn't think anything is wrong with him. He hurt his leg doing major zoomies in the snow on Thanksgiving and was limping. He showed no sign of pain when when being poked and prodded so we gave it some time. It's common for him to pull his back thigh muscle, he's done it four times in 3 years. This time the limping was better in 2 days, he continues to try to run, but when standing you can see he is putting all his weight on his other leg. Tucker's vet likes to veer on the side of caution if the pets are not showing discomfort. I like that about him. There is a strong possibility that this will heal without surgery and we are hoping we can keep him calm enough so that it will. We just need to prevent the zoomies, keep him on leash, walk him to make him use his knee correctly, and prevent him from chasing Vader. He is already putting weight back on the leg after 4 days of anti-inflammatory meds. Fingers are crossed for our boy. Also, thank you all for your kind words about Ellie. We miss her dearly.

Goodbye Ellie

Today is a sad day. Kitteh sister Ellie unexpectedly went to the rainbow bridge while sleeping in a patch of sun on the futon.

Ellie was at best guess maybe 6 years old. She found the hoomans at their apartment in April of 2007 on Easter Sunday. She was starving and covered in burdock from being forced to make it on her own for a Maine winter eating out of the compost. The neighbors down the street had moved in November and they must have left her behind, forgotten - unwanted.

She wriggled her way into everyone's heart with her broken meow and her love of laps. If you didn't pet her she'd lightly pat your face to remind you she was there.

Ellie was the only kitteh that accepted me when I came into the family. She was my kitteh, she never once hissed at me or swatted at me - even when I used her as a napkin. This is us yesterday.

We almost lost Ellie last year when she couldn't eat because of her teeth, we discovered she had periodontal disease. After two weeks of syringe feeding and dental surgery she learned to eat on her own again and was back to full heath. Her checkup in August was perfect, what was left for her teeth were healthy.

This morning Ellie ordered her breakfast as usual, she scolded Vader for chasing her as normal, and she won the best spot in the morning sun. That is were she went to sleep and just never woke up.

Tonight the hoomans sit with an empty lap and a broken heart.

Give us the bird - Eggciting Chicken Update

Sarge is hosting an event: Give Us the Bird! I decided this was a great time to update you on my chickens!
Back in June they started as this:

I helped them grows up in my old baby crate in the basement.

Then once they were old enough they moved outside to their new home.

And now look at them!

And in honor of Give us the Bird Week they layed their first egg today! Isn't that crazy, they must have been waiting for Sarge's event.

I is very eggcited!

Last Weekend's Adventure

Last weekend I went with the hoomans to visit my Aunt D in Connecticut. It tooks foverevers to get there.

Then the next day I went for a great walkie were I met a new friend named Lulu.

Unfortunately I met some other creatures I had never seen before. It was a really warm day and all the baby ticks hatched! The hoomans and I had gone of the trail and then we noticed a tick. We got right back on the trail but I had to stand there for about 20 minutes as the hooman looked me all over and looked themselves all over for ticks. There was about thirty ticks on all of us (they hadn't bit us, they were just on our clothes). We gots them all off and I got a new dose of frontline plus to be sure they didn't bite me in case they missed one. Those peoples in Connecticut have to deal with really bad ticks, Lyme disease is named after Old Lyme Connecticut were the first case was discovered. We have them in Maine too but once the frost comes the ticks go bye bye until spring. I have frontline plus every month and from April - October and then Momma skips a month over the winter. We hardly ever see ticks, let alone this late in the year. I has never had one ever and then a whole tick party exploded on us. We finished our walk, checked ourselves over again and again and then got back in the car.

The tick party was stressy so we needed some pasta. This stuff is soooo good!

When it was time to make the trip back to Maine I was sad to leave Aunt D but I was so tired. We stopped to Colonial Candies in Massachusetts on the way home.

Momma got a very bad for you ice cream (she skipped lunch so she said that made it ok)

I gots plain jane vanilla but it was good! I wonder if Norwood and Mango go here?

I slept the whole ride home, I only woke up to barks at the toll booth attendants.

Boy was I tired when we gots home. It took me three days to get caught up on my beauty rest.

Mayzie's Rescue Me Week - Kitteh Edition

My recycled kitteh brudder Vader would like to do a post.... I can't believe I'm letting him but it's for a good cause.

I was adopted from a shelter a little over a year ago. My humans came to the shelter to find a cat that was male, got along with dogs, liked to play, and would be a companion to the old kitty Patch. I do play a lot with Patch and I enjoy cuddling and chasing my kitty sister Ellie.

I'm a pretty chill guy and don't get into too much trouble. Ok, so I ate all the house plants, I get up on the counters, and I can open unlocked doors. But, besides that I'm purrfect!

I came from The Ark Animal Shelter where I was turned over because the human that had me first couldn't afford to take care of me anymore. So many of us are turned over for no fault of our own. We all need a human to rescue us.

I would like to talk about Ace -

My Momma remembers seeing him when she picked out me. So, Ace has been at the shelter for over a year! He definitely needs a home to call his own. He's a little shy and needs a quieter home versus the shelter. Check out Ace here: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/10367413

Mayzie's Rescue Me Week

I would like to re-introduce you all to Mac! Mac was my foster brother for a little while and I loved having him around.You may already know Mac - I blogged about him here:

While he was with us I tried to teach him to swim, but that is kinda like the blind leading the blind since I can't actually swim. We played with toys together, we played bitey face, and I enjoyed spending time going on rides and walkies wif him.

Well, he's still looking for a home! Can you believe it, nobody has gobbled him up yet. I don't understand he's a lovebug and likes everyone. He deserves a forever home. Recap of my Birthday Adventure

On my birthday my hoomans took me on an adventure. We drove up the big mountain in our National Park.

Cadillac Mountain is 1532 feet high and it is the first place to see the sun rise in the US.

I sniffed the whole way up the winding road.

We still have some color left in our trees.....

And then we arrived to the top!

The air was nice and fresh, too bad it wasn't that sunny out though.

And it was kind of cold and windy. It was maybe 30 degrees out. My nose may have been running a little.

And I may have picked it... BOL.

We said goodbye to the views and headed back down the mountain.

Then we drove over to the Trails for a walkie.

I had to stay on leash in the national park but I still got to explore plenty.

There was a nice stream to get a fresh drink in.

Also, there are some pretty nice stone bridges to walk over.

I had a great adventure on my birthday.

Today I turned 3 years old! I spent the afternoon going on a fun adventure, which I'll share with you later this week. Then I had my pawty! I had a cheeseburger for dinner and then I gots to open some pressies!

I got a couple new stuffies from my Grammy & Grampy. Plus some treats, toys, and a new collar from Momma and Dad.

Opening pressies is so much fun!

Then it was time for cake and ice cream.........

Yum, that was good cake and a good birthday!

Now I've got to wait another whole year for my barkday again.... bummer.

Beach Walkies

Last weekend on the way back from the cottage we went to a beach. The beaches are vacant now as nobody in their right mind would go swimming in the water when it's about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. So I gets to go an be off leash.

The sun was shining nicely.

There was plenty of space for me to run.

And trails for me to create in the sand.

Come on humans, keep up.

Sometime...people... I'll wait for you.

That's better.....

The tide was on it's way out.

So I made sure to do some modeling...

Modeling gets kind of boring.

But, after you are done you get to run on the beach again!

Creepy Wednesday Walkies

This past weekend I went on an overnight trip to the cottage . When I got there on Saturday we went for a walk - Now, this was quite the creepy Halloween walk...

But there were black cats up ahead!!!! One took off and the other hissed at me!!

Chicken Update

Still no eggs, but any day now we are expecting them....

The chickens have grown up quite a bit!

They are nosey and noisy! Always cackling at me... Hmph.

Walkies on the Rails to Trails

In our area the state of Maine took the old railroad that wasn't in use and and pulled up the rails to make a trail! ATVs, snowmobiles, walkers, hikers, doggies - we all get to enjoy it.

The stretch near me is 87 miles long. No kidding Frankie that is the actual number!

This be a beaver dam on the way. It was getting kinda dark but you can still see it on the right. The beavers are trying to build another one on the left of the pictures. I guess beavers aren't bothered by the housing crisis cause they just keep building bigger and bigger houses.

The sun was setting on the beaver's home so I had to head back.

2 miles done, 85 to go....

Agility Equipment

Momma made me some agility equipment. See she's cheap so she went to home depot and spent about 15 dollars on pvcs piping and elbows.

Then she cut the pipes into this many pieces....

And ta-da! Weave poles for me!

And a jump (with 2 different heights)

Seriously woman, I barely can clear that jump it's so high......

Wednesday Woodsy Walkies

Last week Momma took me for a walky on the trails of Birds Acre. It's a habitat for injured birdies like owls and hawks. These birdies can't ever be wild cause they can't fly. There are miles of trails around the habitat and doggies are welcome. There are just two rules. You must be on a leash and doggies aren't suppose to walk near the birdy cages because the birds don't need the stresses.

Walking on a leash is ok....

As long as we stop and sniff.

Check out this big rock, It's called Egg rock.

I gots kind of confused on where to go with all the different trails. We were following the blue trail but I is color blind.

After consulting the map I figured it out.

We gots done right before it was too dark. There's nothing like a woods full of owls hooting to get you walking fast to the car to go home!

Oh Canada

A couple of weekends ago, right after Mac left I went to Canada. I'm not sure if that makes me a world traveler or not, hmm. Anyway the peeps took me to Campobello Island Canada for the day. It's famous because it is where President Roosevelt use to summer with his family. http://www.nps.gov/roca/index.htm

The first step to get into Canada is to cross through Border Control. Humans need their passports. Us doggies need an official stamped paper of our rabies certificate. Momma told be not look suspicious and I'd be fine....

Can you believe they lets me in and didn't even looks at my paperwork?

Roosevelt's estate has some fabulous trails, we went on a 2 mile hike as soon as we arrived.

They also have some beaches, lighthouses, and a big golf course.

Some beaches are not dog friendly at all. They put up a sign for me that said no Tuckers! The nerve....

Campobello Island also has these nice dirt carriage roads you can drive along and enjoy the scenery. I loved sniffing all the new smells from the comfort of my bed. It was a lot of fun.

And when I went back over the border crossing the US border guy handed me a doggie treat - those border crossing people sure are nice.

I'm still here, but I've been busy!

Sorry I've been gone for so long but right after my last post I gots a foster brother! Meet Mac! Mac came from New York to our Rescue and I gots to teach him about how fun being a dog is. See being a dog isn't about being tied up all the time or stuffed away in a kennel, he didn't know that.

Mac and I got along pretty well, in fact I was mopey for 2 days after he left. Mac has gone to be with another foster family becuase he didn't like kittehs at all. In fact the kittehs had to stay in the basement because Mac wanted to eat them. So, Mac stayed with us for almost 4 weeks and then he went to learn more doggie stuff from another family. He has adjusted super well to the new foster family they don't have kittehs.

Mac and I went to the pond together a few times, I tried to teach him to swim - but, I don't know how to swim. So, I taught him hows to run in the water...

And our of the water....

Also, I made sure to teach Mac the importance of a good game of tug. He learned to cheat all on his own.

I miss Mac and I hope he finds his forever home real soon!

A hiking trip

A couple weekends ago I went for hiking adventure.

There were some nice views on the way up.

You have to follow the blue marks to know where to go.

It was hot and I was deciding to stay in the shade.

But, then we reached the top.

And we could see very far!

And when we came down I cooled off in the ocean.

Remember not to drink salt water, I always forgets at first, but then I remember.

I love going for hikes, but boy do they make me tired!

HULA hooping

I googled how to Hula Hoop from Ehow....
1. Take hold of the hula hoop.
2. Lower it down to about ankle level.
3. Step into it (with both feet).

4. Bring it up to just below your waist.

5. Hold it with both hands and pull it forward so that it's resting against your back.

6. With both hands, fling the hoop to the left so that its inner edge rolls in a circle around your body. Do this a few times so that you get the feel of it.

They need to have better instructions.........

Hi Everyone! Sorry I've been gone forever! The hoomans have been very busy and not able to helps me wif my blogging. I finally convinced Momma that we needed to do a post! Walkies at the Ocean Edge

This past week we took a little drive to a spot I has never been before for my walkie. The air smelled so good I couldn't wait to get out the car.

There was a lot to explore.... and a lot of places I couldn't go. Hmph.

It was important for me to model for the hoomans..... they have the cookies.

I had to leave..... I wanted to stay longer. Even the sad face didn't work, I still had to go home.

They came home in a box....... there are 6 of them!

I don't really know their purpose, all they do is scream and poop!

They are currently living in my old baby crate, in da basement where the kittehs can't get to dem..... I just sniff them and walk away. I don't understand why the hoomans think they are so great. Pretty boring if you ask me....... Vader really wants to visit them but he isn't allowed.

Hiya Everyone! Sorry I've been absent from Blogville so much lately. Dad's been working extra hours and Momma been spending that extra time watching me. So, not much time to have the hoomans help me blog or visit my friends. But, last week Dad had an evening off so we went to the beach! I met a new friend there, meet Jaxs!

He tried to gives me a swimming lesson but I still won't go out that far. Besides that water is salty and cold! The ocean up here is only 50 degrees at best right now.

After playing wif Jaxs I got to sniff around the strange stuff as we continued our walk.

It was nice to have an evening wif both the hoomans and meeting Jaxs was great too!

I'm trying to catch up, but I may just have to mark all as read...... over 400 blog posts is really hard to read with all the practicing I've been doing for Honey's Dancing with the Doggie Stars. I've completed a couple rehearsals that have a few mistakes, so hopefully I'll get my routine down a little more this week. I've only got until the 15th to get it perfect. The only hint I'll give you about my routine is that my music is Elvis.....

Oh and the best news - remember Navajo the foster that didn't work out with us? Well, she's been adopted into her forever home! It took awhile to find a home that matched her perfectly but now she has it. We are very happy for her.

I decided to pawicipate in the Parade of Peeps to tells you about my Hoomans.

Lets start first wif my Daddy-O.

My Dad is my favorite play buddy, we play football every night and I loves him to pieces. My Dad went to college to be a teacher but instead he works construction because there is less politics in construction. He really likes sport & movies and I watch movies wif him (well, my eyes are closed). I listen to him a lot better than Momma sometimes and he's the one responsible for feeding me each day.

You may have noticed that there are no picture of my hoomans on my blog. Well, that's cause I have a problem with getting my picture taken wif them. I always shove my face in the way and gives them kisses. For example:

Now Momma went to college for computer science and is software geek and whenever she talks abouts work Dad and my eyes glaze over from boredom. But, Momma is who I runs to if I gets scared and need cuddles. I only ask Momma for belly rubs, no one else. Momma tucks me in each night and she's responsible for cleaning off my eye boogies. I gots the same problem wif Momma when it comes to pictures:

Are you kidding me? Does this mean I can actually be a show dog now? From the AKC Breed Standard : "Nose shall be black, except in the blue Dane, where it is a dark blue-black. A black spotted nose is permitted on the harlequin; a pink colored nose is not desirable. A split nose is a disqualification. "

Oh I reads the rest of the standard too..... I is not a show dog... I've highlighted the text for some of the reasons I can not be a show dog - Plus I is tutored.

General Appearance
The Great Dane combines, in its regal appearance, dignity, strength and elegance with great size and a powerful, well-formed, smoothly muscled body. It is one of the giant working breeds, but is unique in that its general conformation must be so well balanced that it never appears clumsy, and shall move with a long reach and powerful drive. It is always a unit-the Apollo of dogs. A Great Dane must be spirited, courageous, never timid; always friendly and dependable. This physical and mental combination is the characteristic which gives the Great Dane the majesty possessed by no other breed. It is particularly true of this breed that there is an impression of great masculinity in dogs, as compared to an impression of femininity in bitches. Lack of true Dane breed type, as defined in this standard, is a serious fault.
Size, Proportion, Substance
The male should appear more massive throughout than the bitch, with larger frame and heavier bone. In the ratio between length and height, the Great Dane should be square. In bitches, a somewhat longer body is permissible, providing she is well proportioned to her height. Coarseness or lack of substance are equally undesirable. The male shall not be less than 30 inches at the shoulders, but it is preferable that he be 32 inches or more, providing he is well proportioned to his height. The female shall not be less than 28 inches at the shoulders, but it is preferable that she be 30 inches or more, providing she is well proportioned to her height. Danes under minimum height must be disqualified.
Head
The head shall be rectangular, long, distinguished, expressive, finely chiseled, especially below the eyes. Seen from the side, the Dane’s forehead must be sharply set off from the bridge of the nose, (a strongly pronounced stop). The plane of the skull and the plane of the muzzle must be straight and parallel to one another. The skull plane under and to the inner point of the eye must slope without any bony protuberance in a smooth line to a full square jaw with a deep muzzle (fluttering lips are undesirable). The masculinity of the male is very pronounced in structural appearance of the head. The bitch’s head is more delicately formed. Seen from the top, the skull should have parallel sides and the bridge of the nose should be as broad as possible. The cheek muscles should not be prominent. The length from the tip of the nose to the center of the stop should be equal to the length from the center of the stop to the rear of the slightly developed occiput. The head should be angular from all sides and should have flat planes with dimensions in proportion to the size of the Dane. Whiskers may be trimmed or left natural. Eyes shall be medium size, deep set, and dark, with a lively intelligent expression. The eyelids are almond-shaped and relatively tight, with well developed brows. Haws and mongolian eyes are serious faults. In harlequins, the eyes should be dark; light colored eyes, eyes of different colors and walleyes are permitted but not desirable. Ears shall be high set, medium in size and of moderate thickness, folded forward close to the cheek. The top line of the folded ear should be level with the skull. If cropped, the ear length is in proportion to the size of the head and the ears are carried uniformly erect. Nose shall be black, except in the blue Dane, where it is a dark blue-black. A black spotted nose is permitted on the harlequin; a pink colored nose is not desirable. A split nose is a disqualification. Teeth shall be strong, well developed, clean and with full dentition. The incisors of the lower jaw touch very lightly the bottoms of the inner surface of the upper incisors (scissors bite). An undershot jaw is a very serious fault. Overshot or wry bites are serious faults. Even bites, misaligned or crowded incisors are minor faults.
Neck, Topline, Body
The neck shall be firm, high set, well arched, long and muscular. From the nape, it should gradually broaden and flow smoothly into the withers. The neck underline should be clean. Withers shall slope smoothly into a short level back with a broad loin. The chest shall be broad, deep and well muscled. The forechest should be well developed without a pronounced sternum. The brisket extends to the elbow, with well sprung ribs. The body underline should be tightly muscled with a well-defined tuck-up.
The croup should be broad and very slightly sloping. The tail should be set high and smoothly into the croup, but not quite level with the back, a continuation of the spine. The tail should be broad at the base, tapering uniformly down to the hock joint. At rest, the tail should fall straight. When excited or running, it may curve slightly, but never above the level of the back. A ring or hooked tail is a serious fault. A docked tail is a disqualification.
Forequarters
The forequarters, viewed from the side, shall be strong and muscular. The shoulder blade must be strong and sloping, forming, as near as possible, a right angle in its articulation with the upper arm. A line from the upper tip of the shoulder to the back of the elbow joint should be perpendicular. The ligaments and muscles holding the shoulder blade to the rib cage must be well developed, firm and securely attached to prevent loose shoulders. The shoulder blade and the upper arm should be the same length. The elbow should be one-half the distance from the withers to the ground. The strong pasterns should slope slightly. The feet should be round and compact with well-arched toes, neither toeing in, toeing out, nor rolling to the inside or outside. The nails should be short, strong and as dark as possible, except that they may be lighter in harlequins. Dewclaws may or may not be removed.
Hindquarters
The hindquarters shall be strong, broad, muscular and well angulated, with well let down hocks. Seen from the rear, the hock joints appear to be perfectly straight, turned neither toward the inside nor toward the outside. The rear feet should be round and compact, with well-arched toes, neither toeing in nor out. The nails should be short, strong and as dark as possible, except they may be lighter in harlequins. Wolf claws are a serious fault.
Coat
The coat shall be short, thick and clean with a smooth glossy appearance.
Color, Markings and Patterns
Brindle--The base color shall be yellow gold and always brindled with strong black cross stripes in a chevron pattern. A black mask is preferred. Black should appear on the eye rims and eyebrows, and may appear on the ears and tail tip. The more intensive the base color and the more distinct and even the brindling, the more preferred will be the color. Too much or too little brindling are equally undesirable. White markings at the chest and toes, black-fronted, dirty colored brindles are not desirable.
Fawn--The color shall be yellow gold with a black mask. Black should appear on the eye rims and eyebrows, and may appear on the ears and tail tip. The deep yellow gold must always be given the preference. White markings at the chest and toes, black-fronted dirty colored fawns are not desirable.
Blue--The color shall be a pure steel blue. White markings at the chest and toes are not desirable.
Black--The color shall be a glossy black. White markings at the chest and toes are not desirable.
Harlequin– Base color shall be pure white with black torn patches irregularly and well distributed over the entire body; a pure white neck is preferred. Merle patches are normal. No patch should be so large that it appears to be a blanket.
Eligible, but less desirable, are black hairs showing through the white base coat which give a salt and pepper or dirty appearance.
Mantle--The color shall be black and white with a solid black blanket extending over the body; black skull with white muzzle; white blaze is optional; whole white collar is preferred; a white chest; white on part or whole of forelegs and hind legs; white tipped black tail. A small white marking in the blanket is acceptable, as is a break in the white collar.
Any variance in color or markings as described above shall be faulted to the extent of the deviation. Any Great Dane which does not fall within the above color classifications must be disqualified.
Gait
The gait denotes strength and power with long, easy strides resulting in no tossing, rolling or bouncing of the topline or body. The backline shall appear level and parallel to the ground. The long reach should strike the ground below the nose while the head is carried forward. The powerful rear drive should be balanced to the reach. As speed increases, there is a natural tendency for the legs to converge toward the centerline of balance beneath the body. There should be no twisting in or out at the elbow or hock joints.
Temperament
The Great Dane must be spirited, courageous, always friendly and dependable, and never timid or aggressive.
Disqualifications
Danes under minimum height.
Split nose. Docked Tail.

Spring Time Walkies

Finally Spring is starting to show itself around here! It was a long winter wif lotsa snow and cold weather. It's finally starting to get a little warmer here and the sun is finally shining. So we went to the local state park for a evening walkie.

I like watching the waves at the beach.

A Tribute & Dogya Update

Momma was a whole year trying to find something to Honor kitteh brudder Troubles after his passing to the Rainbow bridge. Then she saw Kitty & Coco's Momma's Etsy store

Momma emailed a couple pictures and look at the result!

Kitty & Coco's Momma Lauren captured Troubles perfectly! His pale pink nose, his old kitteh eyes, his chubbiness! Momma's eyes gots all leaky and thinks it is absolutely perfect! She had Dad hang it right up.

Over the top of my picture. Somehow I think it's fitting since Troubles was the KING of the house. He use to beat me ups when I was a puppy. I gots a scar on my nose to proves it. But, after almost 17 years of life -Troubles is very missed.

I've got a lickin' problem..........

Yup I went and dones it again....

Off to the Vet....

Momma was worried cause my furs where coming out in her hand in a spot, and I don't have much to start wifs. I was fine on Tuesday, Wednesday night Momma noticed it, and here it is.

I may have also had a problem in the lower private regions........

My Diagnosis, Yes my vet put this on my PERMANENT RECORD:

"Chronic history of licking in the penile area - appears to have caused damage to left front leg from licking"

Diagnosis: Skin Irritation - Self Induced.

I am so embarrassed... I can't even show my face. I just can't help it. I lick and lick and lick some more. Momma and Dad make me stopped when they are home, but you know someones gotta go to work to pay my vet bills for my self induced problem. But, CHRONIC history of licking - that's just so unfair.

I gots ointment and I should be fine soon. The vet said my hairs will grow back and there seems to be no sign of anything other than my licking of the area to cause the problems. Sigh.

Missing Troubles - One Year Later

In memory of my Kitteh brudder Troubles. It's been one year since we said goodbye and we still miss you everyday. 5/16/93- 3/23/10.

Ok, ok, when you don't count the kittehs I is an only child. Navajo had to go back to the daycare/kennel foster. Turns out she has this thing called separation anxiety and would whine every time Momma was outa sight. Plus, she escaped the crate the first day the hoomans went to work - we ran around loose in the house unsupervised all day. (Momma says it's a miracle we didn't get hurt, hurt each other, or destroy anything). So, the next days she tried to get out of the crate that now had wire ties on it. In the process Navi was hurting her nose from pushing on the crate all day. Also, she was resource guarding and scaring me. The resource was food, and Momma. I had to make big loops out around her and I couldn't go near Momma. So Momma had to take her back so she wouldn't get hurt.

I was so tired from not sleeping...... Seriously look at my eyes.....

But, everything is back to how it use to be and it looks like I won't be getting a sister anytime soon. We'll try fostering at another time.

In other news, I spent the weekend sunbathing....

Meet my new foster Sister Navajo! She's my first foster sister ever and I was really excited to meet her. I like her lots but she has one MAJOR flaw.

Note from Momma: Tucker isn't being pushed off the couch, he simply doesn't get on it if Navajo is up there first. We are very proud of how well Tucker is behaving having another Dane in the house. He was so excited yesterday when we brought her here he did zoomies 4 times. Navi slept in her crate last night and Tucker made sure to sleep in the bed with us, which he rarely does. He doesn't appear too jealous, yet. My concern was the toys, we picked up most of the toys but Navi doesn't appear interested in them anyway. This is our first foster, we are very excited and are trying very hard not to fall in love with her too much.

Whew what a week. All Momma did was whine abouts having so much to do! She had the pukey sickies over the weekend and neglected to do something fun wif me. Anyways this week was quick and the hoomans have been acting all busy like. Something is up I tell you. Momma says I'll be fine but I think something is going on.

Anyway Wednesday was Dad's birfday. I gots all excited and got to help him open his pressies.

I gots him a battery powered fan air freshener for the Truck. That way when I ride wif him and I gots the toots he just has to push a button and the good smells come out and make it all better.

See how thoughtful I am?

Momma got him dumb movies and video games and a gift certificate. Not as thoughtful as my toot cover upper.

I was super helpful wif opening the gifts.

We are hoping things slow down here soon so we can start commenting again on our friends bloggies. We've been doing our best at reading but slacking big time on leaving my valuable opinion on your posts. For example Big Dog Honey, this is how you take care of kittehs:

Momma is helping me catch up on Bloggies, I've been reading but not commenting that much, so I is apologizing to my bloggie friends that aren't getting comments from me. I sorry.

Anyway, this past Saturday I had my annual check up & shots at the vet. My normal 2 vets were not there so I had the poopy vet (I've never had him before but the kitteh's have). Momma had him check my back legs out because I hurt the left one last year and then I hurted the right one abouts a month ago. The right one I hurts getting into the tub (I think I might have got my foot caught on the shower curtain or somethin'). We aren't sure if I hurt my leg, toe, paw, hip, whatever. I limped for a couple days but I didn't complain. In fact I had no problems doing zoomies, jumping on the bed, or getting on the couch. So Momma gave it time. Anyway, the vet found nothing abnormal in his physical examination. So I is good! He did tell Momma she shouldn't bathe me in the tub cause I'm too big. He said I should be bathed outside wif a hose! Can you believe it? It's like 2 degrees outside you dip poop, I have no furs! I'd be an icicle outside! So Momma is ignoring him and will make sure that I am not tired when I needs a bath and we will be extra careful.

Oh and other good news! My histocytoma from here and here ? GONE! You would never know it was even there.

My Weekend Adventure

We loaded up Saturday morning for our big weekend adventure.

Are we there yet?

Oh I don't know how to ski.

Well the good news is that the camp was just named ski lodge, no skiing required. The bad news was it was so cold outside I stayed inside almost the whole time. The whole family was there (Cousin Diesel & Bambi included).

I guess the staying inside wasn't so bad, the camp had couches. And there was always a hooman that stayed inside wif us. But, what were the other hoomans doing? Well, that crazy ice fishing thing we did last year (see that adventure here.) However, it was a double over night trip this time and much colder than last year!

Diesel and I did get to go out once just to see what was going on, but we had to go back in before 30 minutes. We were styling in our coats and boots.

Dis is the lake from the view of the Cabin. It looks really scary wif the open water but that is only because there is Dam next to it causing all kinds of currents in the water. To the right you can see all the ice. It was about 10-12 inches of ice on the lake.

Oh and yes the hoomans caught fishies, but I missed them all cause I was inside. Momma was wif me most of the time but she did get to see Dad's big fish.....

This is a Togue or a Lake Trout. It was 23" in length and Dad kept it for my Uncle to eats because it was the biggest fish of the trip. The Warden service came by and gots it's official measurement and weight. Then they took out it belly guts to take to the lab. The Biologist will test to see what the fish have been eating and make sure that the fish are healthy in the lake.

So after two nights away I is back home. The sun is perfectly on my bed and I has a lot of sleep to catch up on! I'll try to be around to your bloggies once I get rested.

Corbin and Tucker go to Vegas

My buddy Corbin and I is sick of snow and sick of boots, so we decided to take a trip to Vegas!

Corbin: "This plane is awful crowded.... Where is my drink lady?"

Tucker: "Why do I always gets stuck in the middle seat?"

The plane ride was terribly long, especially our layover in Newark! We finally arrived at Vegas that afternoon.

We had to take a Taxi to the hotel, although Corbin had a different idea.

Tucker: "Corbin Dude, that Harley is stuck in the building I don't think it's going anywhere."

Dis is our hotel. Yeah it's really there. I knows mirages aren't real but dis one is.

We were really hungry so we decided to gets something to eat and check out our new digs.

Corbin: "All you can eat baby!!"

Tucker: "Let's explore our hotel. What is so secret about the garden? Let's look back here."

oh oh.....

Corbin: "Tucker, I think this was a bad idea...... nice kitteh.... nice kitteh. Maybe we should hit the pool instead, it was a long flight."

Tucker: "Um Corbin - wake up! I is stuck - remember I can't swim!"

After I gots Corbin up from his nap and saved me we decided we would hit the town and enjoy the lights of Vegas.

Tucker: "Corbin, you can't wear a Yankees hat! It clashes wif my Celtics collar."

After Corbin changed we went out on the town.

We stopped to see the Bellagio fountains but they made Corbin and I have to pee so bad we ran to the nearest Casino....

Corbin: "Is dat Puddles? And Francine? Oh nos"

Tucker: "99 cents They is gonna be in trouble."

So, we found another Casino to relieve ourselves. And then we decided to play some slots.

Corbin: "Tucker you have got to sniff out the loosest slots, you can't just play the first one you see. That's how they gets the stoopids to loose all their money."

Tucker: "Corbin, what does max bet mean? oops... "

Corbin: "Dude you are so gullible, that slot didn't even have a chair. You spent your whole toy allowance on one pull. I'm finding a better machine. Go get yourself a drink."

Tucker: "Gambling makes me thirsty, I likes the big water bowls they haves here."

Once Corbin found a better machine I watched him play (since I runs out of money on my Max bet).

And Finally....

JACKPOT!!!

We won 87 thousand dollars!!!!

But, since we don't have social security number and couldn't file a W2-G. We had to forfeit all the moneys..

They told us Corbin's conciliation prize would be waiting for him the next day when he gots home.

So, we went back to the hotel to sleep.

And flew back home the next day. I gots the window seat this time!

And, Corbin was pretty happy with is conciliation prize.

I took them out for a spin. Only 1 fell off at the end of our 30 minute walk, not too bad i guess. Momma says she needs to put them on tighter. I thinks she needs to just leave them at home.

Lack of Sleep Mystery - Solved

OK so the past week I have been getting up at strange hours of the night and have been barking at the front door. It's been 11pm, 1 am, 2am, 4am, etc. It wakes the hoomans up. Momma gets up tells me no one is there and then lets me out to go to the baffroom. I don't really have to go, but I do it anyway. The hoomans don't understand why I keep waking them up. Well we finally have a cause of my night time disruptions.
10:00 PM: Time for bed, I go outside to tinkle one last time. The kitties are put downstairs so that I don't chase them unsupervised, kitty door is closed. Momma and Dad go to bed.

1:00 AM: I barks at front door - Momma wakes up. She is grumpy.
1:03 AM: I goes outside and pees to make Momma feel better about getting out of bed.
1:05 AM: Momma goes back to bed, Dad is grumpy now too.
1:06 AM: Instead of sleeping on my couch I is scared so I climb into bed wif Momma and Dad.
1:07 AM: Momma grumbles that I is stealing the covers. We all go to sleep.

2:10 AM: We all wake up to a kitty meowing at the foot of the bed!
2:11 AM: HBO words are used as Momma scoops up Vader and realises that he has escaped the downstairs to wake us all up.

Evidently recycled kitty brother Vader has discovered how to open doors! Since we have long handles instead of door nobs he has learned to reach up and pull the handle down. It takes him a few tries and we have witnesses him doing it. So, the pulling of the door handle made me think that there was someone at the door. When it fact it was Vader trying to escape his nighttime confines. The easy solution is the lock the door so that he can't open it. I just can't believe he's been tricking me into thinking someone is at the door knocking at night. Does this mean he is smarter than me? I sure hope not. I've gots some sleep to catch up on.

Well, there are lots of Danes in Rescues. The number 1 reason we get turned over to shelters/rescues - We are too Big! Yes, there are stupid people out there that get a Great Dane as a puppy and then say "I didn't realize how big it would get". Seriously.

Now I'm not saying that's the only reason we gets stuck in shelters and rescues there are many other reasons that are common in all breeds: Health problems - can't afford care, moving, death in family, not getting along with other pets, new baby in the family, poor behavior, etc.

But - I know of a particular Dane that just came into the Rescue we are volunteers for. She does look a lot like me. But, being harlequin all of us are different. For example:

Ouchie Update

So remember my Histiocytoma I posted about back at the end of December? Well it's time for an update. A couple weeks ago I was playing wif my basketball and I busted it open and it was bleeding like crazy. Momma had to put cornstarch on it to stop the bleeding. After that they cleaned it all up and it's been healing nicely. Mr. Vet said that they go away in a couple months on their own once the body recognizes the tumor. Well, I sped up the process because the bump is all gone now! I just have to wait for my hair to grow back now (i think that's cause of me busting it open).
